Current Research Opportunities

The Undergraduate Research Portal connects TSU researchers and undergraduate students to collaborate on cutting-edge research projects. As an apprentice, students will work with faculty and staff members, learning advanced research skills, explore academic interests in more detail, and experience what the research environment is like first-hand.

Browse the Undergraduate Research Portal by Area of Interest

TSU research activities often have a variety of aspects. While many opportunities are optimized in the faculty member's own assigned area of expertise, sometimes researchers seek the expertise of students from very different academic pursuits. The Undergraduate Research Portal is an excellent opportunity to connect in multidisciplinary fields, so keep your mind open to the many possibilities.

1 Research Assistant Astronomy COE-ISEM/Mathematical Sciences Fall 2014 Muterspaugh Matthew Active
The Tennessee State University Automated Astronomy Group is a part of the Center of Excellence in Information Systems. The Center is located on the top floor of TSU's Research and Sponsored Programs Building on the northwest corner of TSU's main campus in Nashville. The Automated Astronomy Group conducts a variety of astronomical research programs with automatic (robotic) telescopes located at Fairborn Observatory in the Patagonia Mountains near Washington Camp, Arizona. We also collaborate with the US Naval Observatory and Lowell Observatory in Northern Arizona to use the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer, a system capable of producing images 200x sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope and image the surfaces of stars.

Student researchers will work on new instruments for TSU's largest robotic telescope, the Automatic Spectroscopic Telescope and/or data analysis techniques for analyzing the observations made with the telescope. Research experiences may include travel to the observatories.
